I think that riding on the back of a scooter and paying close attention to the revs is the first step. (If you know how to drive a standard car this is easy to learn) Next standing over the bike with feet on the ground, not sitting on the seat feel the clutch in first gear. This got me used to the tension needed to engage the clutch. I found that once felt this out I could easily get on the seat and tool around an empty parking lot. After riding around a bit in first and second in the parking lot I felt comfortable on the street.
Take your time and don't get frustrated.
