VBB idles too slow & stalls

by: John Ife (net0116058.direcpc.com) on May 26, 2000 at 23:25:13

Okay, Ive dutifully researched the archives but couldn't find anthing specific to my problem. My newly rebuilt VBB started and ran fine (though a little slower than I remember it before) for the first week / 30 miles or so. Then it became very hard to start so I dismantled the carb and cleaned it, replaced the condenser, and adjusted the points and plug gaps. It started right up and ran significantly better on the test ride. Now, a day later, it still runs great when I get it going but it's very hard to start again and no amount of adjusting the slow running adjuster screw and/or throttle slide adjusting screw will give sufficient revs for it to idle without dying. In fact, adjusting the slow running adjuster screw seems to have no hardly any effect on idle speed. Gas seems to be flowing freely to the float chamber and, with the air filter off, I can see a mist of gas getting to and beyond the throttle slide. The engine had all new seals on the rebuild. I haven't checked the timing but I did set it up very carefully when I first reassembled the engine. There is, on occasion, an overflow of gas from the carburettor and I intend to get a new float needle, but I don't really understand how, if this is the problem, it would cause it to be impossible to get the idle revs up sufficiently even with the throttle adjuster turned all the way in. Is there anybody who can offer some assistance in my confusion? Should I be looking at the timing again?

Thanks,

John Ife
