"Cannonball Update"
| |
LAST EDITED ON Sep-11-06 AT 11:54 PM (EDT) Here's the information I have so far for day one and two. Sorry, its not much, phone reception is an issue.Day Two - John Day Oregon to Hailey Idaho At the start we had 3 bikes in the sag wagon. Mike Garrett, Mike Bobadillo and Sailor Sara had break downs. Heytens blew a clutch side seal, and repaired it at this time. 6 bikes in the wagon. The SAG Wagons are full. There are going to be riders that will either have to drop out or get their bikes fixes quickly. There is a rule in effect that if a bike is not running for two consecutive days and in the wagon, the rider is out so as not to hold up the group. The tNg's came in 1-12 today. The Vintage bikes came in later in the day, about 2 hours later. The riders were going through a couple of forest fires and there were some smoke issues, but all in all it sounds like they had a great day of riding. A lot of elavation gains, lots of twisties. Riders are at least 7 hours apart. At the time of this posting riders are still showing up. It's 9:00 pm local time. Order in. A-Class (Super Stock) Stan Obal Rolf Soltau JD Merryweather B-Class (other TnG) Chris Gaydos Owen Medd John Smith
C-Class (manual stock) Janice Ashrat Roy Cross Heather Knight D-Class (Modified Manual) Patrick Owens Mark Hougton Tom Donaghue Day one - Pacific City Oregon to John Day Oregon The start of day one had its share of problems. Directions turned out to be an issue. There was one crash. Mike from San Jose lowsided into the lava fields. Rob Downs, Mike Garrett , PJ, Jim Smith all had break downs and did not finish. Jim is having parts overnighted due to a break down. Most riders finished by 4:00 pm. Order in. A-Class (Super Stock) Stan Obal Rich Glass Ady Oren B-Class (other TnG) Chris Gaydos Mike Bobadilla Owen Medd
C-Class (manual stock) Janice Ashrat Jason Funderburk Heather Knight D-Class (Modified Manual) Mike Heytens Patrick Owens Scott Baxter ¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤ Robert - FLCSC www.scootercannonball.com

Luckily Mobboss has his own team of Soviet Mechanics. Too bad for the running dog imperialists. Glad to hear your back on the road. Unfortunaly you didnt make the order listing today because you came in 4th. Better luck tomorrow. ¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤ Robert - FLCSC www.scootercannonball.com

i also broke down on day one. having fuel starve issues. pulled the piston today - have a nice crater on the head but no hole. still, very low compression. think the breather T i'm using for the inline/extended tanks is too narrow and not feeding fuel quick enough under load. plug was dark and dry. no scoring on the cylinder wall. airbornevespa has had several issues, the largest one now being a bent crank. may have something to do with riding 90mph (indicated by passing car flashing "9 - 0" with their fingers) earlier in the day. there has been quite a few breakdowns. we have eight slots for bikes on the support vehicles and all eight were used yesterday. garrett and i are leaning towards calling it a day vice taking up space needed on the trailer (although including garrett and i, only four will be starting on the trailer today). it's been great meeting new faces and seeing old ones, but most likely, we'll be bidding the cannonball adieu. ------- no sig. |

Don't give up yet! Use that extendo tank as a reserve - when you need gas, pull over and siphon that gas into your regular tank. What piston do you have? Can someone send you another one? |

Lets help Rob diagnose this. What do you all think.Personally I think its not fuel delivery but an airleak. How else could it have low compression and a melted piston crown at the altitude rob is at. I say airleak, any knowledgable wrenchers have an idea? Post your ideas here and I can phone them to Rob. ¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤ Robert - FLCSC www.scootercannonball.com

Tell those yahooos to give it a little choke when they think its leaning out and if it picks up a bit then they really are lean... otherwise retard timing. A ride like this can be a beautifull test to see what minerals you are made of. Dont give up! I watched Dean from Deanspeed... well actually I fell asleep on the side of the freeway just outside Gilroy.... while he rebuilt a top end. Using a swiss army knife I pulled piston rings back out of a piston. Dean cut gaskets from a littered coke box. A few hours later we were back on the road to San Fransisco. Other times we used nuts and bolts and wire we found on the side of the road to get us to the next town. A screwdriver jammed in a hole can sub for a missing bolt sometimes. I just overnighted DCRob a new piston and rings to their stop in Nebraska. There are some spare gaskets too. I don't want him to give up!!! There was such a rush on that bike, and I was trying to teach Rob how to build the motor, so we did the best we could under the time constraints, and I'm feeling terrible about these problems, because I try to take every measure to build bikes that don't blow up, even if it means sacrificing some potential power. shitCheers Greg Vice President for life, Scott Baxter Scooter Club, minute taker of the Chris Herman Scooter Club Oh and apparently http://scoot.net/faq/TV200 |
