STREET LEGAL!**
**Not street legal in certain Indiana and New Jersey municipalities.

At least a web site which tells the truth! Right now, NJ isn't registering 50CC's. Whats the deal with Indiana?

I bought a Panterra 49cc gas Retro scooter from PepBoys on 8/13/05/. I tried to start scooter after charging/installing battery. I put gas in scooter to try to start it. It would not start and I tried to return to PepBoys on 8/15/05. They said they would not accept the return and give me back my money because it had gas put in it. They said that they would need a RGA number from BajaMotorSports who was handling warranty. I contacted Baja to try to get RGA number and they said that they could not provide RGA without an "authorized service center" looking at scooter to see it was defective or what.
After many calls to Baja Customer Service, I finally got the scooter to a service center and they determined that the scooter had a short and tried to order new parts for it. But they said that they were not able to get in touch with BajaMotorSports on any consistent basis (would always get voice mail), so they finally gave up and said that they would no longer be an "authorized service center" for BajaMotorSports. So as of 9/20/05, I still have not been able to get the Panterra 49cc gas scooter fixed or returned to PepBoys. DO NOT DO any business with PepBoys or BajaMotorSports. PepBoys are a bunch of ripoffs and Baja said that they would assume warranty work for Panterra scooters for PepBoys, but they are NON RESPONSIVE.

If you paid with credit card just call your bank and put a charge back to Pepboys, you'll see how soon you get responses, if not you got yourself a free scooter.

   >The 250 cc Wilderness Quads are compleate junk, and i have tryed calling there company to get a RGA #, but to get a manager on the phone is imposible to talk to, they tell you they need to email them to get them to call you, but you never get called back. the bike i have i rode for 20 min and it rattled the tranny slipped and sterring was off and hard to put in gear. it was the biggest waste of $ 2299.99 i have ever spent. Its to the point where im getting a lawsuit together to get my money back. I dont understand why pep boys sells these pieces of junk, its just giving them a real bad name.

My brother and I bought two brand new Baja Heat Mini Bikes, the 6.5hp version.

We've beat the crap out of them for a week straight, and so far, have had no problems.

We contacted tech support through the website (which is working fine) and a guy named mark emailed us back the same day with color photos of the engine parts we had questions about.

Together, we removed the throttle limiter pins, shaved off the throttle governon control arm, replaced the air box with chrome 4" open-air cylinder units, and get 30mph out of these little babies.

Next, we're replacing the exhaust.

These bikes only cost $500, and I fully expected them to be crap, but must admit I've been happy with the bike and the support.

Take the other two reader's advice:

1.. Contact the Better Business Bureau on both Pep Boys AND
BajaMotorsports.

2.. Contact Pep Boys HQ and file a complaint. Be sure to mention
how many times you've tried to resolve this in a civil manner.
State dates, times, and people you've spoke to. Inform them of
your inquiry into the BB above.

3.. Write Email, Write a letter, and call BajaMotorsports and inform them
of the action you are taking with the BB and your failure to resolve
through Pep Boys.

If that all fails, dissasemble the unit, shrink wrap it, and send it
back to BajaMotorsports "postage due".

Or remove all serial numbers and stickers, and just drive it through the front window of PepBoys. That's always good satisfaction...

I have purchased a Baja Heat 6.5 HP and would like to know how you adjusted the governor , throttle pins, etc. Also where did you get the chrome 4" open air cylinder unit. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks,

In response to #3 my situation is very similar. MY purchase of a 49cc
gas scooter 12/28/ 05 after getting the scooter home the next morning
I smelled gas in the garage and notice a spell on the garage floor. I had someone look at it and was told that the gas line was leaking and that the starter would not start. I contacted pep boys and got no satifactory response. They were very evasive to the point that they have not sent me the registration and tags for the purchaseof the scooter. I have contacted them serveral times and the reponse always the same. They have sent an email to baha motorsports. They told me they could not reimburse me for the purchase of the scooter. But they were ordering the part for repair. As of this date I have not received any parts.

Wow! what a problem! I would recommend contacting the Attorney General in the state the Manufacture does business. I had a problem with a Tank Rep and saler. With the help of the Attorney General I got a new replacement. I am now very happy. They really try and help you. Keep a record of your situation and give them the address and all contact info.

Good Luck!!!!!!

Im old enough to remember when Pep Boys actually sold auto parts. When you walk in there now it looks like a swap meet.

Funny thing about Pep Boys scooters is that they cannot sell them in California. Seems that California actually checks the legality of scooters.

I took my '62 Ranchero in there for their four for $99 tire deal only to be told that my suspension needed replacement, which I knew was BS. Later I it to a mechanic that I know and trust who told me there was nothing wrong. They got angry with me when I went in for the cheap tires for another car and only took the wheels in. Seems that the real profit in the cheap tires is in the extras.

Personally I prefer North Hollywood Auto Parts, which is a local family run auto parts store. Last week I bought a master cylinder, all wheel cylinders, all brake hoses, all brake pads, a thermostat (with gasket), all radiator hoses, a radiator cap, and a gas cap. These parts were for a 1959 Edsel Corsair. The week prior they sold me a power brake booster for a 1963 Mercury Monterey, which they had in stock! Try finding someone at Pep Boys who even knows what an Edsel is. My point is that you should always support your local independant auto parts store. Too many of these guys have gone out of business due to the big chains. Plus the old guys behind the counter always have some great stories.

Where I live in California, I have a Pep Boys within walking distance, which is good if you're like me and do your own brake jobs, batteries, etc. The big problem with Pep Boys that I have experienced is that you better know what your parts look like or take the old one with you, because you need to check what they are giving you. I have had numerous occasions where they have given me the wrong brake pads, shoes, wiper motors, etc, and if I hadn't checked right there, I would have gotten home with the wrong parts. Their checkout counters are an exercise in extreme patience. They do have Panterra scooters at my Pep Boys, but only the electric ones. They look cool, but they're dangerously slow. Top speed is something like 30 mph.

Last i heard was bank took over Nikita/Nikota(SP) because pepboys returned bunch of containers. Pantera was the company that pitched the idea to Pepboys using Nikota's name. Bajaj is hired to takeover support and determine warranty. Pantera has a warehouse in industry i think.

NJ has banned the registration for all 90CC and under scooters.

Whoa, "Jim at Tank". Are you claiming that BajajUSA, the importer of the Indian built Chetak motor scooter, are now handling service and warranty for the PepBoys pseudo-scooters?

I used to be a scooter rider, now I'm a moped rider.I'm a bit confused here.I know for a fact that "TANK" scooters are JUNK.A local company here in Scottsdale AZ sells the things, and they have a mountain of broken parts out back. The aluminum castings are really thin and tend to crack in a very short time. The welds also tend to break, and the metal is too thin to reweld. The plastic body panels are so brittle that there are cracks in them when new, just from the screws that hold them together.I have been a professional mechanic(automotive) for 28 years(no,I don't work at Pep Boys, and I don't buy parts from them either),and a scooter/moped enthusiast for a long time, and I have seen a lot of junk Chinese scooters, and you would be hard pressed to find any scooter that is a bigger piece of junk than TANK.Stella,Bajaj,Honda,Yamaha, and Vespa make good scooters.Kymco is also pretty decent,as is Derbi.I heard(but don't know for sure)that CPI makes a good scooter.Jerry.

Truth is normal people have things to do and don't have time to listen to some guys story behined the counter who takes his time. I normally want to get my part and walk out! If I really need to know something I pick up a book or check my computer or look for the old man.

Don't get me wrong I appreciate the informative suggestions when buying a part, but not hearing about "That reminds me about the time..."

As for Pep Boys it's an auto parts express convenience check out store. Like everything else, if i didn't change it too would go out of business. If I needed a part for for my 60's Honda motorcycle, I wouldn't find it at my normal local Honda dealer..................nevermind..

I just wonder since when Pep Boys is a registered motor vehicle dealer? What gives them the right to sell both street legal and off road vehicles? Does one get a title or an MCO when buying from them? MCO may be fine for mail order, but for local sales they should be titling the bikes for you.

Pep Boys will not work on it for you, or help you get parts. You have to go directly throught the manufacturer and find somebody who is willing to work on it if it breaks (good luck). Unless you want to roll up your sleeves and work on the scoot yourself. It also has a 90 day warranty, what does that tell you? It tells me that it will not last that long. I would be careful, and spend the extra dough to buy a dependable scoot from a dealer that will stand behind the product they sell.

They aren't the highest quality things out there but there are parts are available now that Pep Boys has wholesaled off their inventory. I've got just about everything for the "Retro" model... I was riding one and I needed some parts... I ended up buying 4 of them. They're all new and never been titled... just cosmetic damage. Let me know if you need parts or advice.

want to fix your Panterra scooter yourself? Contact me for a copy of the Service Manual. You wont find this manual anywhere else. If you are one of the tens of thousands of people who purchased one of these scooters from Pepboys or other automotive chain you'll know what a gold mine this is.

This is the SERVICE MANUAL (not consumer manual that came with the scooters) used for repairs, diagnostics and maintenance by authorized service centers. It took my team of designers and technical writers more than six months to research, write and illustrate this manual... and PanTerra Motors went out of business before it could be sent to the service centers!!!

It is more than 180 pages long and contains hundreds of detailed illustrations showing how to fix just about anything on these scooters.

Chapers cover CHAPTER 1: Introduction 2 CHAPTER 2: Body Cover and Exhaust System 28 CHAPTER 3: Scheduled Maintenance 33 CHAPTER 4: Lubricating System 45 CHAPTER 5: Fuel System 52 CHAPTER 6: Engine Removal and Installation 67 CHAPTER 7: Cylinder Head Valve 71 CHAPTER 8: Cylinder and Piston 88 CHAPTER 9: Driving Belt Device & The Starting Lever 96 CHAPTER 10: The Final Transmission Assembly 110 CHAPTER 11: The Crankcase and the Crankshaft 116 CHAPTER 12: The Front Wheel, Front Brake, 124 Front Buffer and the Front Fork CHAPTER 13: The Rear Wheel, the Rear Brake & Rear Shock 140 CHAPTER 14: The Battery and the Charging System 146 CHAPTER 15: Ignition System 160 CHAPTER 16: Starter System 166 CHAPTER 17: Meters, Switches and Lighting System 173

NOTE: This is a highly technical manual intended for service centers who are familiar with tools and procedures in repair and maintenance of gasoline powered scooters. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

contact me at creativeblox@yahoo.com for price and availability.

I bought a Panterra electric scooter from pep boys last year. The scooter had a lot of problems and pep boys would not support it. They passed everything off to Baja Sports for support. But Baja Sports would not support it either. I made dozens of phone calls to pep boys and baja motor sports but all they did was promise they would get back to me and never did. I have considered taking legal action against them but lack the resources to take them on in court. So I have had to fabricate my own parts over the last year. By making my own modifications and parts I have been able to keep my scooter going for about 2000 mi.

People...please wake up!.......Ignorance is no longer a valid excuse nor is unreal frugality when deceiding to purchase a motor vehicle, like a Motor Scooter. Do your homework like most intelligent people do....read all you can about Motor Scooters, the good, the bad and the illegal. I spent over a month reading all I could and researching website after website before I purchased my used 2006 Vespa LX150.(a fantastic and fun Quality Scooter)...I am so glad I had the knowledge and basic backround to make a wise and intelligent purchase. You should also educate yourself about the Motor Scooter Industry in order to make an informed buying decision. Quality does and should cost more! Please do yourself justice....look into Vespa and all Piaggio Scooters as well as Kymco, TGB, Hysong, Dailem, Honda and Yamaha......Scooters from Italy, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan are of high quality. CF Moto from China is now gaining decent reviews....All other Scooters from China I would run away from! Be smart, savvy, and be ready to make an intelligent buying decision!

i to bought one of these electric abortions but fear not there is ways to keep it running if you happen to like the design. the first thing i had to do was fix the ignition the key switch is not made for 50v at current you need a 20a single pole single throw and jumper it in to make the inverter work first time every time. for more fixes email me at turns4us@aol.com make sure you put panterra in the subject line or it wont be opened. i know its tuff to find good ecological friendly transportation so i make mine work in california.

I have an electric retro from pepboys. When I first got it, it only ran 22-23mph. I got brave and now have been running it at 60V by adding an extra 12V battery in series. Now I can go 28-30mph which is barely adequate on 25mph city streets. It is still on the slow side, but it is pretty environmentally friendly. The best part is never needing gas so I don't contribute as much to multi-billion dollar quarterly profits by big oil companies or much as to global warming from CO2. Although some CO2 is made when electricity is made, it is much less than a gas engine makes for the same distance. The cost of electricity to operate it equates to between 0.5 and 1 cent per mile which at $3 per gallon equates to between 300 and 600 mpg. I will wholeheartedly admit that the bike is very low quality with absolutely no dealer or manufacturer ever from day one of purchase. I have been on my own and the problem list is too large to list here and is still growing. I even tried contacting the manufacturer in China who told me that they only provide parts 1-2 years after manufacture then no longer.
