http://losangeles.craigslist.org/mcy/93240184.html It requires both registration AND insurance even if its a moped in california, PLUS it doesnt have pedals or is electric only either which are requirements for moped here, so its a motorcycle. This guys is lying. |

This is all true. Mopeds are considered motorized bicycles. The bike does have pedals, it is both electric and kick start capable. |

California statue requires a M2 moped drivers license to drive a moped. Second, mopeds are required to be registered as mopeds with a $15 registration, which also requires proof of insurance.So you are wrong.

Sec. 5030 A motorized bicycle, as defined in Section 406, is required to display a special license plate issued by the department 5036 A service fee of fifteen dollars ($15) shall be paid for the issuance or transfer of a special license plate for motorized bicycles, as defined in Section 406. Publicly-owned motorized bicycles are exempt from the fee.5037 (a) No motorized bicycle first sold on or after July 1, 1981, shall be moved or operated upon a highway unless the owner first makes application for a license plate and, when received, attaches it to the motorized bicycle as provided in this article. 12500 (b) A person may not drive a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized bicycle upon a highway, unless the person then holds a valid driver's license or endorsement issued under this code for that class . . . . 12804.9(b) In accordance with the following classifications, any applicant for a driver's license shall be required to submit to an examination appropriate to the type of motor vehicle or combination of vehicles the applicant desires a license to drive: * * * (5) Class M2. Okay, I got the California Motorcycle Handbook, and talked to the dealership I bought the moped at. Turns out, the dealership was not knowledgable on the subject of mopeds (yeah, great huh?) as they gave me the wrong info, (I had to give them a copy of the handbook.) The moped does fall under the same regulations as a scooter, in CA. Sorry for posting it incorrectly, I was only repeating what the dealership had told me. |
