"Big Chief = Geely = Big Crap"

LAST EDITED ON Sep-07-05 AT 06:24 PM (EDT)

Some guy rode up on a Big Chief scooter with 65 km on the odometer. Seems that it keeps blowing fuses, so he has to use the kickstart. Told him he should try to get his money back from GS Motorsports who sold it to him since the bike is very illegal and will probally fall apart soon. Note the absence of a kill switch in the pictures.

We have Big Chief here too.

I'll try and take pics of it tomorrow so we can compare notes.

The one we have basically didn't run from out of the crate. The guy unloaded it before we could get him to load it back in his van, and left. We've asked for a deposit before we start work on it. We asked 3 weeks ago, and he's not brought one in, so it looks like its been abandoned.

I suspect it needs a voltage regulator replacement.

Oh, by the way, there are NO dot enforcement officers in the USA, none. It is pretty much pointless to report DOT violations sad to say. No one ever gets any more punishment than a strongly worded letter!

I'm wondering if you were able to get the CORRECT parts shipped from GS Motorworks. We've had a horrible time getting them to ship the right parts, or even any parts. They're a joke. I called a local repair shop who said they had the same problem with GSMotorworks last year and actually told their customer to come get the scooter because they couldn't get parts for it. Big Chief is a big pile of crap and their service is crap too. You'll start with Bailey for a parts order, then Nick will fill the order and ship it out (maybe). WHen you get the order something will be wrong with it. Ours came and the piston they sent would NOT fit into the cylinder that they sent. The problems only got worse from there. I placed my REPLACEMENT order two and a half weeks ago. I'm currently waiting for Nick to return my call and give me a tracking number. I'm not holding my breath. I'm just going to tell everyone to beware. Next stop Ebay - since that's where they sell half of their crappy scooters.

You're spot on Alexa. Because of the known problems getting parts, we get the customer to do the ordering, otherwise we have to start charging for the massive time spent, and normally the customer is happier to save money, as in this case.

The bike needed a new stator. We told the customer exactly what was needed. He called and ordered it. Note that the bike has warranty left.

New stator came in this morning. Its totally the wrong one. Wrong size, and totally the wrong specs. Kind of like ordering a stator for a P-series and getting one for an ET2.

Since this is a Geely bike, you can get parts from www.geely-usa.net. Very good service and website and things get shipped promptly.

Customer wants to try and get the parts under his warranty, but I'll pass the link on, just in case he decides to give up on the warranty. Thanks Lev.

I have been having the same problem since purchasing my bike in May 2005. Service dept. (provides no service), So called mechanic (has no clue) when talking to my mechanic about the parts I need. So my mechanic has given up and I'm stuck with no bike....Is anyone interested in a class action suit to at least get if not all, but some of our money back?

Ken's parts are extremely over priced. I mean everybody is entitled to sell their products for whatever price they choose but I sell the smae parts for 20-80% less depending on the part. Just compare my prices at www.scootersus.com

I am having the same issues with my Big Chief. What a p.o.s. First I had serious shipping delays, then it didn't run right brand new out of the box either. I made it around the block twice with it stalling when I stopped. Now it won't start at all. Sure enough they sent the wrong part and now I'm pretty sure that the old part that they thought was bad is fine. Ordered a new carburator (under warrantee) and we'll see if they send the right one and how long it takes. In the meantime my brand new scooter sits while my friends are buzzing all over town on thier new ones (different brand). I should have spent the extra $100 and bought locally from a dealer. Live and learn. Money back? I'm all for it.

Yeah, bought a Retro from GS Motorworks. After serious shipping delays, got the scooter with massive scratches going across the side of the body. While adjusting the rear-view, the bolt that holds the assembly to the handlebars snapped. Bought a new one from Home Depot. Added oil and gas, charged the battery, and when we went to start it, we pulled the brake and the handle that controls the brake snapped. Waiting for the replacement to the brake handle. Bike won't start. Engine tries to fire but the engine won't turn. Contacted GS Motorworks, and I'm waiting for their technician to contact me. I don't trust my wife to drive that piece of crap down the road so we already decided to cut our losses and put up another $2000 to get a new Honda from the dealership with a real warranty. I guess I'll try to fix it and sell it on ebay or something. GS MOTORWORKS... BUYER BEWARE!!!

As much as it pains me to say - I worked on a Linhai "big chief" or whatever the fuck it is. And I NEVER work on Chinese stuff. And it pains me even more to say it had a couple thousand miles on it, and it didn't require hardly shit to get it running.

Now this one was probably not the norm, but once I got it running I could wheelie that sunofabitch across the parking lot without even pulling on the handlebars. It surprised the shit out of me. I spent like 45 minutes just popping wheelies in the parking lot without any issues.

That being said the bike is a total POS and I was embarassed when someone pulled in the parking lot and saw me on it. Above 20 mph the frame is so insaly spindly the frame flexes to the point where the handlebars move forward and back about a whole 3 to 4 inches. Yikes.

I wouldn't advise anyone to buy one, but I gotta say this little thing was pretty tough and fun as shit...as long as you don't leave the parking lot on it.

Oh, and you are dead on about the Geely. This was only the second (and LAST) Chinese bike I worked on. What a peice of shit.

So it's some non profit group that helps inner city kids that brought it to us after no one else would touch it. How the hell am I going to say no to the kids? So I agree. Holy fuck I should have just stuck a gun in my mouth right then.

So the tank is empty. Ok, easy enough. I figure out why the tank is empty - it leaks like crazy. Fix the tap, replace the fuel line, install a battery, and remove all the broken plastic on it that just falls apart when you touch it. Kickstarter doesnt work, and a million other issues like broken switches and stuff....this thing has only like 100 miles on the clock.

I hit the starter, and it spits out about half a gallon of old gas and oil out of the exhaust. It smells like an open ass and I'm sitting there dry heaving as I spray starting fluid in the carb to try to get it to go. What a total peice of crap carb and intake setup. Not only that, you have to drop the motor to even get to the fucking carb. And I can tell there ain't shit for primary compression, there is at least one bearing about to explode, and EVERYTHING is loose and just ready to break.

So the owner gets called and is told its been 5 hours so far, and it'll be quite a few more since I have to drop the motor. He fucking FLIPS and swears we are ripping him off. He refuses to pay, so now I have a Geely "fashion" or whatever. Whoop de fuckin' do. I don't want the damn thing, I want my money for working on it.

I hope whomever designed this motor dies slowly of ass cancer. The rest of the bike is just as crappy as the motor.

What's the moral of this story? FUCK the kids. And fuck Geely.
