   Very interesting.

Here's a good link for people wanting to check out VINS, slightly better than the NHTSA site:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIN

Also, here's a fact for those in NJ on why so many bikes get rejected.

NJ MVC actually checks the WMI before they check the import database. If the manufacturer shown on the MSO doesn't match exactly the details shown in the WMI database, the registration gets rejected.

For example: Genuine Stellas use the LML WMI. Every MSO we receive has to have LML on the MSO.

They also check the VIN coding to make sure the bike's VIN reflects exactly what the description is. No match, no registration. Once in a while a registartion slips by, but its rare.

Going back to the WMI/MSO crosscheck, this brings an interesting question about whether NJ will honour certain small manufacturer exemptions fron 1 January 2006. I have had no definative answer from the MVC or the manufacturers claiming this exemption as of yet.

Just remember this - in this country they drive on the wrong side of the road.

NJ checks the WMI and to do so they must call the central office in Trenton. I purchased a Strada scooter and had to go back three times before all the paperwork was in order and one of those times was because the Trenton office was closed. They seemed well aware that the it was a Qianjiang scooter above all else. Knowing how tuff they are I doubt it would be easy to slip anything past them.

They should know because I am one of the people that helped train them!!

Once in a while a MVC worker does make a mistake, but Trenton hops on it pretty fast and its not unheard of for a registration to get recalled.
