"CPU server in a boat ... ideas anyone?"
| |
So our server crashed for the "umteenth" time on Friday ... I'm told we've gone through 7 servers in a year and a half ... It is of the belief that due to the heavy truck & bus traffic outside of our building ... the vibration is shaking things up inside the server ... something about a drive turning at so many thousands of rpm's ... getting jiggled and corrupting data ... What we basically have to do is put a server in a boat .. to try and deaden the amount of vibration being sent into the server ... I've been thinking of: (1) packing the top/bottom and sides in LOTS of foam ( leaving the drives exposed and the rear of the computer exposed ) and possibly setting it up on a very low platform with bed springs under it ... (2) .. ( it's a wacky one ) making a very strong square wire frame ... find a way to attach bungie cords to the server and have it suspended like in a spider web ... (3) fill a kiddie pool with water .. and put the server on a floatation device of some sort. Anyone got anymore ideas? V.G.H |

you don't want water anywhere near a server. build a sturdy table, fill it with fine sand, seal the sand in with something and put the boxen on that. kinda like a homemande hologram table, only sealed. or, come up with a platform for the boxen using a spring or airbladder to absorb ground vibrations. |

Co-locate your server at a server farm that is properly insulated. Enjoy, John M. Stafford

I like your suspension idea the best. Suspend a platform using steel cable and adjustable gas filled shock absorbers. As an alternate, I think HVAC companies sell vibration dampeners for use when they mount an HVAC platform in the attic. I'll bet there is already some type of isolator made for computer platforms. |
