"Ahh, further proof that words are just that..."

Sad. I knew it was too good to be true. See, not all of us are "TO HELL WITH ALL THAT IS BUSH"...I was actually supportive of his initiative, really! But it's crap like what this article reveals that just further demoralizes the quality of his character in my view. To use something as serious as AIDS to give a cheap boost at the polls in such a blatent and flat out lying way is...tasteless and demoralizing to anyone who has ever known or WILL know anyone with this sad disease.

Good thing we only (oh please oh please) will have to put up with these ignorant antics for another 327 days.

-L

"Just last year in his State of the Union speech, the President said "I ask
the Congress to commit $15 billion over the next five years...to turn the
tide against AIDS in the most afflicted nations of Africa and the Caribbean.
Seldom has history offered a greater opportunity to do so much for so many."
At face value, it was an historic request, with Congress and AIDS activists
ecstatic about the promise to pump $3 billion a year into combating AIDS
throughout the world. U2 Singer Bono, who has been one of the leaders of the
AIDS fight, "hailed" the President's speech, saying "If we can turn the
president's bold long term vision into near term results we're excited,"
adding, "any delay in increased funding means more lives lost and an even
bigger check in the future."

Unfortunately, as the LA Times reported, just five days later, the President
introduced a budget in which he "only sought $2 billion for the year" for
AIDS - 33% less than he had promised. The Senate later voted to increase the
President's request, and Bono visited with the President to urge him to keep
his promise. Nonetheless, the White House "repeated its strong opposition to
any funding beyond $2 billion" while claiming with a straight-face that the
President was doing all he could. When questioned about the discrepancy,
White House spokesman Scott McClellan simply refused to address the issue,
saying only "The President has shown unprecedented leadership in the fight
against AIDS."

Because that's politics. Promises to the masses and commitments to the money.

Yea, me too. I also feel bad for his lover of 10yrs. I cant imagine.
The guy had so much strength and positive energy, he could make any situation good, and was the ultimate life of the party, whatever the event was. And I envied that!
His family has had many hits through out the years. He came from a Catholic family of seven. He had 2 brothers and sisters. Both his brothers are also gay. Weird thing is that his oldest brother, who was in perfect health, died of a scooter accident, and his older brother has aids as well, but has a high t-cell count. The mother died some time ago. So, the father and sisters will more than likely outlive the remaining brother. I cant even fathom that!

Ah great, I hope I did'nt depress anyone.

I can't tell you how much that ticked me off. The $15 billion promise was really such a great thing (if he had stuck to his commitment). The African AIDS crisis is far worse than most people understand. It's truly a nightmare in some African countries.

But, to put this in perspective, if he at least makes good on the $2 billion, that's a great thing. The Clinton administration in its two terms only provided something like $385 million. So Bush is still raising the bar, even if it's not as high as he promised.

But, to FURTHER put this in perspective, the U.S. General Accounting Office said that the Pentagon couldn't account for $1 TRILLION (!!!) last year. That's a trillion dollars of your money, fellow tax payers. (And it's not the first time, or the highest amount of public money for which the Pentagon cannot accout, either.)

That should REALLY piss you off -- regardless of your politics.

In my dreams, I slash your tires.

yeah, i heard about the Pentagon story, it was news for like a day.

jeez, a trillion dollars magically disappeared, and it ends up a short blurb on the news. brilliant.

we could buy FOUR Iraqs for that kind of cash.

Yes, I am in agreement in that point. I am sorry I didn't express that in my opening post. More is definitely good, money has no political slant, only those who pass it do.
