Just reading up on this, it's actually $61 million according to Reuters. Still nothing to sniff at, but at least it's not a B. David K In my dreams, I slash your tires. BTSC http://www.burgundytopz.com |

LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-03 AT 09:19 PM (EDT) ARe you talking about the overcharge from HAliburton? If so, then either Reuters or your papers has the typo. DOn't know which. Time to check a third source.*beat* Just checked LA TImes, it has it down as a mil, not a bil. Again, $61 million of yours and my money is still annoying beyond belief. ALSO: Watch NOW With Bill Moyers on PBS tonight. It's all about the Pentagon overspending and lack of accountability. Ought to be top-notch stuff. David K In my dreams, I slash your tires. I rechecked my paper, the small headline under the main one says billion but it says mil in the copy. Still.............*low whistle* I thought my fuel prices were high. Unforgiven SC - the NEW home of Unforgiven SC http://www.unforgivensc.net

LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-03 AT 12:04 PM (EDT) I'm well aware of the fact that the Pentagon overspends. But the point is 1) just because it's *always* happened doesn't justify it, and 2) it's getting to the point where it can't account for TRILLIONS of dollars ($1 Trillion this year, and several tril over the past several years). It also cannot account for multiple tanks and jet fighters, as well as other major pieces of high-priced military hardware. Moreover, the fact that the GAO has conclusively exposed this fact, yet the public is not up in arms about this scandal blows me away. Are we really this fatalistic/unaware/stupid that we are willing to let a government agency have no idea where it has put trillions of OUR tax dollars? Exactly how rich is the military industrial complex getting thanks to the public's complacency? Why is Congress letting this happen when year after year the GAO makes them aware of it? Eisenhower warned us this day would come -- and he was right. Anything BBS folks: you should be writing your reps/sens right now. Let them know they cannot turn a blind eye to this any longer. PS: The same guy who exposed the Pentagon overspending in the 1980s is the same guy Bill Moyers interviewed last night. It was fascinating and eye-opening stuff. Hope you guys watched it. The best was Bush's response to the question "is it legal?": "....dunno, I have to speak to my lawyer." How dumb do you have to be? He could have diffused the sitation with a single statement and little thinking, but no, God had a different plan.
"Look, all I know is that this cord here was plugged into my house, and your house was glowin' like the frickin' sun. So I put two and two together there, and decided you're pissin' me off." |
